Written in response to a city hall hearing at the Board of Supervisors I gave expert testimony at concerning the city’s Healthy Streets Operation Center (HSOC), this long-form article was designed to communicate my research to a general audience. It considers the adequacy of San Francisco’s shelters and the degree to which the city’s treatment of street homelessness is effective and humane. The questions included in the article were directly used by Supervisor Matt Haney in the subsequent hearing. The blog post received over 1,000 views in the first 48 hours, and then went viral after Billionaire Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce who is supporting higher corporate taxes to address homelessness, tweeted it.
